From 21 to 27 October 2024, it is International Open Access Week. This year's theme is 'Community over Commercialisation'. For this occasion, NWO and OSNL, in collaboration with the UNL/UKB project group Diamond Open Access in the Netherlands, are publishing an online portfolio featuring various contributions about the diamond open access model – a form of open publishing driven by the academic community and rooted in academic values. You can find the collection here. Let us know what you think.
NWO has announced an upcoming call to support academic journals in transitioning from a subscription-based model to a diamond open access model. Journals will soon be able to apply for funding through the Diamond Open Access fund, which has a total of €500,000 available in this round.
This grant aims to support editors, academic societies, foundations, and associations seeking to convert their existing subscription journals to diamond open access. Each project can receive up to €50,000 to cover costs associated with this transition to a non-profit, diamond open access model.
Journals are expected to establish a sustainable business model within a maximum of 24 months to ensure their continued operation beyond the grant period. Applications are open to researchers affiliated with Dutch universities, universities of applied sciences, and other research institutions. Additionally, editors of international journals are also eligible for this funding.
