EOSC projects EOSC-hub and OpenAIRE-Advance started in January 2018

In January 2018 two new EOSC projects started, EOSC-hub and OpenAIRE-Advance. The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) project aims to make it easier for researchers to share and combine data, also across disciplinary boundaries. The development of the EOSC started last year with the EOSCpilot.

EOSC-hub: Integrating and managing services for the European Open Science Cloud

The EOSC-hub project funded within the EC’s Horizon2020 programme has a consortium of 100+ partners from more than 50 countries. The consortium will develop the vision of the Hub as the integration and management system of the future European Open Science Cloud.

EOSC-hub mobilises providers from the EGI Federation, EUDAT CDI, INDIGO-DataCloud and other major European research infrastructures to deliver a common catalogue of research data, services and software for research. EOSC-hub will significantly reduce the fragmentation of the IT facilities and digital tools in Europe. Project leader is EGI Foundation in Amsterdam.

In the Netherlands there are different institutes involved in EOSC-hub. DANS - Data Archiving and Networked Services - will contribute in particular to 1) the development of policies to facilitate the sharing and safe processing of research data, 2) the integration of trusted digital repository services and long-term preservation and 3) the support of researchers and support staff in the proper management of research data.

OpenAIRE-Advance: OpenAIRE Advancing Open Scholarship

The Horizon 2020 project OpenAIRE-Advance is the successor of OpenAIRE 2020. The latter project will continue until June 2018. OpenAIRE stands for Open Access Infrastructure for Research in Europe. The goal of OpenAIRE is to support the Open Science policy of the European Commission. The EC wants publications and datasets financed with European research funding to be made open access available. Open access is compulsory for publications; for datasets since 2017, but this is still a pilot (Open Data Pilot). In OpenAIRE Advance, 48 partners from European countries work together; the University of Athens is the project leader.

DANS together with the TU / Delft library form the National Open Access Desk (NOAD) for the Netherlands. The NOAD informs the research institutes about EC policy in the field of Open Science and the support that OpenAIRE can offer. In addition, DANS is task leader of the Research Data Management Taskforce (RDM). The aim is to increase the knowledge of the European NOADs with respect to RDM. DANS is also involved with the national portal NARCIS in the implementation of the OpenAIRE CRIS / CERIF Guidelines.

Cooperation

EOSC-hub will liaise closely with OpenAIRE-Advance to realize the EOSC. EOSC-hub also connects to the project FREYA: Connected Open Identifiers for Discovery, Access and Use of Research Resources, that started in December 2017. DANS is also involved this project.

Duration of EOSC-hub en OpenAIRE-Advance is January 2018 till December 2020.
