International Open Access Week 2016 - activities in the Netherlands

The theme of the International Open Access Week 2016 is ‘Open in action’. Dutch libraries are promoting this annual event by a series of activities.

UvA, VU and AUAS

On 24, 26 and 27 October there are seminars for staff, students and others who are interested. The subjects are:

Science for kids
VSNU negotiations with large publishers
NWO policy concerning open access

Erasmus University, Leiden University, Delft University of Technology

‘Publish for impact’ is the title of a seminar in the Science Centre at Delft on 27 October. It is organised by the universities in Delft, Leiden and Rotterdam and OpenAIRE. Subjects to be discussed are:

publishing, visibility and impact
the importance of being open
using complementary methods of measuring impact

Maastricht University

At Maastricht, the University Library will conduct a number of workshops for researchers who are about to publish.

Radboud University Nijmegen

Staff of the University Library will make spontaneous visits to academics in all faculties and inform them of the support they can give on open access publishing and research data management. The online open science service will be launched. During their regular meetings, academics are informed about the support the library can provide. To this end, a presentation has been made. These activities start in October and will be continued throughout the year.

Utrecht University Library organises workshops on Open Access

This year, during the Open Access Week 2016, the University offers three workshops on the theme of Open Access publishing. Questions that will be discussed during the workshops are: Where can I publish best and why? What should I be looking for if I want to publish in an open access journal? And how do I finance my article or book publication charge? The workshops are open to the University Utrecht academic community and specifically designed for researchers who want to publish their research in open access, but like to have more information about the how and why.

In the Open Access Week 2016 there will be library staff present at some of the faculties (Humanities, Social Sciences, Law, Economics & Governance and Geo Sciences) to provide information on and answering questions about the assistance they can provide in open access publishing and research data management. You can recognize these employees by their orange T-shirts with an Open Access logo.

Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS)

DANS organizes two events in the context of the International Open Access Week 2016.

Tuesday 25 October

On 25 October, from 12 to 13:30h CEST, an open science seminar will be held at DANS. Speakers will be Jan Brase, Head of Research and Development at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Göttingen State and University Library; Peter Doorn, director of DANS and Elly Dijk, Policy advisor DANS/NARCIS and National Open Access Desk (OpenAIRE). The seminar will be chaired by Herbert van de Sompel, Head of the Digital Library Research and Prototyping Team at the Research Library of the Los Alamos National Laboratory and DANS Visiting Fellow. Wednesday 26 October

OpenAIRE has scheduled a full week of webinars on various topics which will shed some light on the implementation of Open Science and the activities OpenAIRE is involved in. Wednesday October 26, at 12.00 CEST, a webinar on Research Data Management in Horizon 2020 and the Zenodo repository functionalities will be held, with Marjan Grootveld (DANS) and Krzysztof Nowak (CERN): "Open Research Data in H2020 and Zenodo repository". National Library (KB)

The Koninklijke Bibliotheek will promote open access with a view to the general public by means of Academic literature for everyone [in Dutch].

Rijksuniversiteit Groningen

The library of the University of Groningen is mounting the Go Green campaign for green open access, by means of posters with propositions, social media and a webpage with support information.
