Oxford University Press hybrid cap reached

The cap for Oxford University Press (OUP) hybrid journals has now been reached, ahead of the previously forecasted date. While an update earlier september indicated that the cap would likely be reached in the third week of November, a higher-than-expected volume of articles submitted in October has accelerated this timeline by one week.

As a result, corresponding authors affiliated with Dutch universities and University Medical Centers (UMCs) will no longer be eligible for free publication in OUP hybrid journals. However, the cap for full open access journals has not yet been met.

For authors whose articles have already been accepted but who are unable to cover the article processing charges (APCs), there are alternative options available. One such option is to publish under a "closed access" model and, after a six-month embargo period, make the article publicly available in the author's institutional repository under the Taverne Amendment. This provision, stemming from Article 25fa of the Dutch Copyright Act, has been adopted by several Dutch institutions as part of their publishing policy. Please be aware that the specific procedures for implementing this may vary between universities and UMCs.

For more information on the Taverne Amendment, OUP's open access agreements, or other open access publishing options, authors are encouraged to contact their institutional library for guidance and support.
